Fort Zachary Taylor State Park is Key West’s top beach destination—with clear water, soft sand, and excellent snorkeling right from the shore.

By Gus Moore
If your ideal Key West day includes a little history, a little beach time, and a lot of good vibes, Fort Zachary Taylor State Park is the spot. This place has it all: a historic Civil War-era fort, shady picnic spots, and the best beach on the island. It’s like combining a history lesson with a vacation postcard. The beach is also the only spot in Key West where you can go snorkeling right from the shore.
The fort itself is fascinating. You can wander through cannon-lined walls, peek into barracks, and imagine what life was like guarding the island over 150 years ago. Then, when you’re ready for a break, stroll just a few steps to the beach for snorkeling, swimming, or simply lounging under a palm tree. Bonus points: the beach is one of the clearest and most scenic in Key West, making it perfect for families, couples, or anyone in need of a little Vitamin Sea.

Fort Zachary Taylor State Park is one of my favorite stops in Key West because it perfectly blends culture and relaxation. You can explore history, snap amazing photos, and enjoy the best beach in town — all in one spot. Whether you’re a history buff, a beach lover, or just seeking a peaceful escape from Duval Street, this park has it all.
